Norman Borlaug's Legacy: Winning the Battle Against Hunger
"There can be no permanent progress in the battle against hunger until the agencies that fight for increased food production and those that fight for population control unite in a common effort. Fighting alone, they may win temporary skirmishes, but united they can win a decisive victory to provide food and other amenities of a progressive civilization for the benefit of all mankind." -Norman Borlaug (1970)
"Over the next 40 years, that success spread throughout Latin America and Asia. The Green Revolution, as Dr. Borlaug's life's work is called, cut global hunger in half. Some critics say the world's efforts to improve poor people's lives are doomed. But Dr. Borlaug is proof that large-scale progress is possible. He is a genuine hero, and his story should make us optimistic about the future." -Bill Gates (2009)
"(Norman Borlaug's) legacy is that with hard work and determination really anything can be accomplished." -Bill Reed (2014)

Swaminathan helped bring Norman Borlaug's miracle wheat from Mexico and breed it with the local Indian species to create a wheat variety that yielded much more grain than traditional types. He also used the same methods to develop a miracle rice which led to similar results.
Continued Research: Durable Rust Resistance in Wheat
Building on Borlaug's work on Mexico, The Durable Rust Resistance in Wheat Project started in 2008. They seek to alleviate rust threats that will replace susceptible varieties with resistant varieties, created by plant breeding and delivered through developing country seed sectors. The project also aims to advance in genomics to introduce immunity into wheat.
