Process Paper
I was inspired to choose Norman Borlaug and his work as a topic for Leadership and Legacy because it reveals how one person can have an enormous impact on increasing food production to provide for an exploding population. His leadership and innovation in areas such as the Green Revolution, contributed significantly to saving more than 1 billion from dying from starvation. I also traveled to India last summer and had the idea to interview Indian scientists about Borlaug's work in South Asia.
I had the benefit of using many diverse resources that would be hard to duplicate. First, on my visit to Indian villages last summer, I had the opportunity to have a one-on-one discussion with Professor Annapureddy, a leading authority on Indian farming. In October I attended the World Food Prize Symposium in Iowa which was started by Dr. Borlaug. Here, I had the opportunity to engage with Dr. Sanjaya Rajaram, the recipient of the World Food Prize 2014, and with Mr. Bill Reed, nephew of Dr. Borlaug, who inspires others to continue the good work. In addition, I have performed online research, and studied many journals and books on this topic.
I chose to convey my extensive work on this topic through a website that showcases all the salient points. This medium will also allow me to include key information on this important topic through pictures, graphs, and videos.
Norman Borlaug was truly able to change the course of agricultural production through his innovations in wheat varieties. Through his scientific and humanitarian leadership, he was able to develop a disease resistant high yield wheat variety. The creation of this "miracle wheat" established him as the father of the green revolution, and through many other techniques in agriculture, he has left a lasting legacy in the agricultural and scientific world.
